New York Yankees 1929 Road light weight wool flannel blend jersey # 03

In 1927, the New York Yankees returned to the winner's circle, as they beat the Pittsburgh Pirates for their second World Series title. Dubbed with the name, ?Murderers Row,' the Yankees used the heavy-hitting bats of Ruth and Gehrig to dominate the American League. In 1929, the Yankees joined the Cleveland Indians and added player numbers on the back of their uniforms, but the Indians were actually the first team to appear with the numbers because the Yankees were washed out on opening day. The Yankees used the numbers to develop a structure to their every day batting lineup. The new numbering system caused a stir amongst the purists of the game, but ultimately proved helpful. By the 1932 season all teams in both leagues were given the permission to identify their players in this fashion.
