Iowa Hawkeyes 1939 Football

Iowa football suffered in the 1930s until Dr. Eddie Anderson was hired in 1939. That season the Hawkeyes could scarcely field 11 men on the gridiron let alone battle teams which often featured defensive and offensive units. Innovative and bold, Coach Anderson instilled a fighting spirit in his team which captured the nation's heart. The outgunned and outmanned Hawkeyes of 1939 shocked the nation with dramatic wins over several powerhouses including No. 1 Notre Dame 7-6. Nile Kinnick, 1939's Heisman Trophy winner, and his teammates, out of necessity, played both offense and defense, becoming known as the legendary Iron Men.
